Although Princesses Don't Become Engineers isn't out yet, I've written around 10 chapters of my next book, The Ugly Stepsister (tentative title). Having done heavy revisions in previous books, spending too much time adding/removing major characters, deleting entire scenes, making drastic plot changes...I'm going to try something different this time. I will be asking for feedback for the story in progress. If something feels wrong, I want to fix it right away. I'll send it in three installments of 20~25k each, so the reader will only have to work with 70~100 pages at a time. Here's a description of the book: To-do list: *Persuade the prince give the ball *Learn how to behave like a Victorian lady *Find fairy godmother *Prevent other stepsister from sinking her claws into Prince Charming *Find out why Cinderella has a mother and two brothers in the poorhouse When Kat accidentally rips apart an old childhood picture book, she's magically transported into the world of Cinderella--as Katriona, one of the ugly stepsisters! Life turns upside down now that she’s a highborn lady and must learn how to survive the social season, including how to get through the door in a huge metal hoop skirt. To get back, she'll have to complete the story, right to the end of happily ever after. But the odds are huge: the other stepsister is drop-dead gorgeous, the fairy godmother is nowhere to be found, and the prince, despite being insanely hot, openly dislikes balls. Can she ever return to the modern world? Sounds interesting? Here are a few more things I'd like to ask of the beta reader: 1. Feedback on plot, characters, style, setting are appreciated. If you catch any glaring grammatical errors, feel free to comment on those, but what I'm looking for is major content issues. Which brings us to... 2. I've prepared a list of questions about the characters, plot, setting, etc. The questions will be modified according to different parts of the story; for example, I won't ask about the ending until I send part 3. Also, please bear in mind that I will carefully consider the feedback, but will not necessarily make changes to every one of them. 2. Be honest! Be brutal! Don't be afraid of hurting my feelings. 3. You have one week to read each installment and write up the feedback. Here is a tentative schedule I've drawn up: When the book is completed and professionally edited, I will send each reader a free ebook and paperback copy, with acknowledgment of thanks (unless you'd rather not be included). So if you're interested, please fill in the form below by August 7th. Or just comment in this post. Thanks! |
